Understanding Genetics-Human Health and the Genome - free resource from Stanford U

Understanding Genetics: Human Health and the Genome is a free resource from Stanford University School of Medicine and The Tech Museum.

There are online exhibits, news, activities, resources, articles, videos and much more about Genetics. There is even an "Ask the Geneticist" page with questions and answers. The topics include what are genes, diseases, mutations, medicines, news, and more.

The activities and resources are very well designed, engaging, and educational. It is an excellent resource for teaching genetics and can be scaled for multiple grade levels.

Bones, Stones, and Genes - the Origins of Modern Humans, - free education resource

The 2011 Holiday Lectures on Science

Bones, Stones, and Genes - the Origins of Modern Humans, is a new free resource from Biointeractive, a great site from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It was one of the lectures from last year, but the DVD (free) is now available.

In Bones, Stones, and Genes, three leading researchers of human evolution reveal the fossil and genetic evidence chronicling the origin of humans. It is available as streaming videos (or downloads) and as a free DVD. It is divided into parts:

Lecture 1: Human Evolution and the Nature of Science by Tim D. White, Ph.D.
Lecture 2: Genetics of Human Origins and Adaptation by Sarah A. Tishkoff, Ph.D.
Lecture 3: Stone Tools and the Evolution of Human Behavior by John J. Shea, Ph.D.
Lecture 4: Hominid Paleobiology by Tim D. White, Ph.D.
Discussion: Genetics of Bitter Taste Perception
Discussion: Reporting Scientific Results to the Public

There are lectures, interactive features, videos, animations, student discussions, interviews and even Spanish subtitles for ELL.

The lectures and materials on Biointeractive are excellent and a great addition to any teacher's resources.

Genome.gov National Human Genome Research Institute National Institutes of Health

Genome.gov is the National Institutes of Health site on the National Human Genome Research Institute.

The Education page on it has a huge amount of resources for educators, including fact sheets, genetics careers, all about the Genome project, webinars, lesson resources, links, and an online education kit about the project.

This is an excellent resource for Biology and Genetics teachers to get other resources, lesson ideas and more. This is an important topic that has scientific and ethical implemcations

Learn Genetics - great resource with virtual labs

Learn Genetics is a great resources from the University of Utah.

Learn Genetics has interactive videos and demos that explain different concepts of genetics. The web site is nicely designed and easy to navigate. There are articles about genetics and the technology behind it, virtual labs and much more. The virtual labs include DNA Extraction, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, and DNA Microarray. Most schools can't afford the equipment and supplies to do these labs for real, so this site is a great alternative and the students still learn about the concepts.

There is also another site from the university called Teach Genetics which is a beta preview teacher companion site for Learn Genetics. There are some resources now, with more coming in the future.

These are great resources for Biology and Genetics teachers.

My wife, a Biology teacher, found them and told me about them. She found them very useful and easy to use. Her students loved the virtual labs and learned the material while experiencing something new and fun.
