Mimio Teach Interactive System - great IWB system with great features

Many teachers use interactive white boards in their classrooms. They can be used for interesting lessons, engaging students at the board, recording what is done on the board, and controlling the computer from the board.

There are a variety of brands and devices out there, and one that I like is the MimioTeach system. This turns any white board into an interactive white board. It can capture handwritten notes, annotations, operate the computer and presentation from the board and more. The receiver is mounted on the white board using suction cups or adhesive mounting brackets or magnets.

There is software for it that is similar to the Smart Board software and there are tons of lessons and resources available on their site. You can capture what you write on the board, your annotations, create your own lessons with the MimioStudio software, or use some of the lessons that are in their library.

The Mimio system includes the MimioTeach (make any white board interactive), MimioVote (classroom response system) and MimioPad (wireless tablet) and MimioView document camera. The entire MimioTeach family of products are excellent to use.

Another nice feature is portability. You can use them anywhere and the system is wireless. The capture can even capture to the device and then connect to a computer later to transfer captured data. A teacher moves rooms, the Mimio goes with them. Need to use one in another room, bring one along. Storage is a snap too since they are small. Lock them up to protect them from theft or damage. Bring them along to a conference and use them with your presentation.

If you are thinking about getting an interactive whiteboard, check out the Mimio System. They are more cost effective and easy to install and operate. The products all integrate with each other, are easy to use, and have great support. There are discounts for educators, great training materials, and a vibrant community of educators and lesson resources.

now!Board - portable interactive whiteboard technology

now!Board is a portable interactive whiteboard system from Learning Resources. It turns any whiteboard into an "interactive" whiteboard. It is very small, consisting of a sensor and a stylus that fit in a small case and then connects to your computer via USB cable.

It is $499 retail, which is less expensive than most interactive whiteboard products. You obviously need to provide the computer, whiteboard (or other surface, even a wall), and projector.

The software installs quickly on your computer and then you calibrate the sensor just like you would with a SMART Board or Mimio system. The sensor sits near your projector and you have to move it to get it to line up. It was not as quick and easy as I expected. The Mimio system is easier to set up since the sensor mounts right on the whiteboard itself. (The Mimio is also very portable). The stylus is easy to hold and use.

The software has similar functions to other IWBs, but there is not as many features or pre-made lessons at this time. The software does allow you to annotate, draw lines and do screen captures.

The construction felt a little cheap as it is very lightweight plastic and the calibration took longer than it should. But, it is inexpensive and very portable so it might be a good fit for many teachers.

I have a Mimio system in my classroom that I use and love. It is more expensive than the now!Board, but less expensive than a SMARTBoard. It is also portable and the software is similar to SMART Notebook.

This is another resource that teachers can use. Like everything else, personal preference is a factor and you should try out different products before purchasing.

Mimio New England Virtual Users Group being formed

Mimio makes some great devices for teachers. The Mimio Teach system turns any white board into an interactive white board and works perfectly with the Mimio View Document Camera, Mimio Vote classroom response system, Mimio Pad wireless control tablet, and Mimo Capture ink capture system. I have one of the early versions, the Mimio Xi, and love it. My wife has the entire system and really loves it. The students love using the Mimio Pad to do things from their seats, especially the shy ones. The system is a great tool for educators.

Mimio also has some great teacher resources on their site, including a community forum.

But, teachers supporting teachers is always a great thing. One of my fellow Discovery Educator Network CT Leadership Council members, Lynn Reedy, is a master of Mimio and is looking to create a New England Virtual User's Group for educators who use Mimio products.

The group would meet once a month online in a virtual classroom and all sessions would be recorded for those who couldn't make it. The sessions would include resource sharing, lesson ideas, tips, and how to use the Mimio products in the classroom.

If you are interested, please go to Lynn's original article on the DEN blogs and reply to the post.

Win a MimioView Document Camera by sharing lesson resources

Dymo

Dymo Mimio has a contest for you. You can win a MimioView Document Camera (I used them and they are very nice) just by sharing your lesson resources.

To enter the contest, just post a winter-inspired lesson on MimioConnect and you'll be entered for a chance to win a MimioView Document Camera. MimioConnect is a community of educators who use Mimio technology and share lessons, resources, and ideas.

The winning lessons will be selected by the MimioConnect community and Mimio and you can vote too. There will be 3 grand prize winners, one for grades K-5, one for 6-9 and one for 10-12.

Just upload your winter-themed lesson to MimioConnect and add the tag word "winter2011".

Lessons will be evaluated on:
  • lesson objectives are student-focused, observable, and measurable
  • lesson is sequenced from few to many and easy to difficult.
  • lesson has multiple opportunities for students to practice skills
  • lesson page is uncluttered and relevant to activity
Deadline for entries is Midnight EST December 23rd, 2011.
Round 1 finalists selected by Mimio 12/24 - 1/16 2012.
Round 2 winners voted on my MimioConnect members 1/16 - 1/30 2012.

Share your lessons and get a chance to win a document camera. Not bad.

MimioTeach system - great tools for teachers - IWB, CRS, Doc Camera, and more

Many teachers use interactive white boards in their classrooms. I’m not a big proponent of these because they are very expensive and most teachers I’ve dealt with just use them as projection screen, not really interactively.

However, there are some features I like about them. Anything you “write” on the board is captured and saved and you can manipulate your computer from the board.

I use an alternative that I am a big fan of. I have one of the original Mimio devices. The Mimio turns my white board into an interactive white board. I can capture my handwritten notes, annotations, operate my computer and presentation from the board and more. There is a wireless stylus to use that can also be used to advance a presentation from anywhere in your room. My models lets you put a dry erase marker in a special holder that has a transducer on it to transmit to the receiver. The receiver is mounted on the white board using suction cups or adhesive mounting brackets.

Here’s an image of the original Mimio Xi (like mine) system:

There is software for it that is similar to the Smart Board software and there are tons of lessons and resources available on their site. You can capture what you write on the board, your annotations, create your own lessons with the MimioStudio software, or use some of the lessons that are in their library.

The MimioCapture system is what I have (the older version) and our district has purchased many of the other products including the MimioTeach (make any white board interactive), MimioVote (classroom response system) and MimioPad (wireless tablet).  The teachers that use them love them. The MimioView document camera is also really nice.

The device was originally marketed to business people so that they could capture their notes in a meeting. The company expanded into education and has a great support system and training for educators.

If you are thinking about getting an interactive whiteboard, check out the Mimio instead. They are more cost effective and easy to install and operate. The products all integrate with each other, are easy to use, and have great support. There are discounts for educators, great training materials, and a vibrant community of educators and lesson resources.
