Young Scientist Challenge - excellent STEM activity with prizes

Discovery Education and 3M have again partnered together to bring you the Young Scientist Challenge for students in grades 5-8. The challenge has them create a 1-2 minute video describing a new, innovative solution that could solve an everyday problem. Ten finalists will be chosen for their passion for science, spirit of innovation and ingenuity, and effective communication skills.

Students need to think critically about the world around them; identify an everyday problem relative to their lives; brainstorm real-world solutions using science, technology, engineering and math STEM principles; and produce a 1-2 minute video explaining their innovative solution.

It is a great way for students to explore science and win some great experiences and even money.

The site has some excellent resources and support. Entries are accepted into April so get going soon!

What does your desk say about you?

I saw this press release below about a contest about office desks and found the contest to be a fun thing. I'm wondering if any teachers had seen it, as teachers' desks do say a lot about them, their personality and how they work.

Lifehacker does a lot of features like this about people's workspaces and I always find it interesting.

If you want to be more organized, check out the tips HERE.

Take a look at the winners' desks (click on their name below) and look a the Lifehacker features - it's fun.

What's your desk look like? What does it say about you?

Here is my desk.

  • Calendar and schedules posted on the cubicle wall.
  • Reference books and notebooks (and good ol' Al Einstein) on the left - I still have a couple of books and notebooks that I use in paper form
  • Photos of my wife and daughter
  • water bottles
  • Evernote split cup holder - holds a couple of pens and my smartphone when charging http://goo.gl/WrBy0l
  • spot for laptop with power cable, Ethernet cable, and mouse ready to go
  • desktop organizer with pens, binder clips, tools and such
  • Evernote scanner (scans right into Evernote) http://goo.gl/UIoiwv
  • And the most important item - coffee mug

Simple, clean, efficient. (I'm very organized at work, not as much at home - hard to do with a toddler running around :-) )

OFM Announces Winners of ‘My Desk Says’ Contest
Contestants let their desks speak for themselves

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — OFM, a leading office and school furniture manufacturer, distributor, and wholesaler, announced the winners of the “My Desk Says” social media contest. The contest asked office workers to share photos on Twitter of their desks along with the hashtag #MyDeskSays and a brief description of what their desk said about them and their work.
“The office desk is really just an extension of the human mind,” said Blake Zalcberg, chief executive officer at OFM. “This is the workshop where you do your thinking every day, basically, and it can be revealing, often unintentionally, about what’s going through your head. It was fascinating to see what people thought about their desks in this contest.”
Jan Repman of Etters, Pa., won the “Messiest Desk” award, while Philip Bock of Kohler, Wis., was the winner of the “Most Organized Desk”.Krista Bainbridge of Milwaukee won the “Catch-All Desk” award. The winners will all receive an OFM chair of their choice.
In previous contests, OFM has asked office workers to share creative ways they prevent coworkers from stealing their stapler, what kinds of doodles they draw in long meetings, and why they deserved an “office makeover.”
“Contests like this allow OFM to see office furniture in its natural habitat,” added Zalcberg. “We always learn something new about how people use our products when we ask them to share photos or even just stories about what they do at work. And I think that people get a kick out of sharing them too. The modern office can be an interesting place.”

Learning Resources Logo

Learning Resources announces the sponsorship of a teacher grant hosted by WeAreTeachers. To apply, teachers must answer this question: “How would you use portable interactive technology to create collaborative lessons?” After the application process concludes, educators can invite colleagues to vote for their favorite lesson ideas. Each of the three top vote getters will win a set of three now!Boards and three GeoSafari Tuff Cams, a prize package valued at $2,000. Additionally, two merit-based winners selected by a panel of teachers will each win one now!Board and one GeoSafari Tuff Cam, a total value of $700. Teachers can apply for the grant online through May 22, 2012.

Why limit your classroom to one room and one teacher? Instead, with the advent of new portable interactive technology like the now!Board™, teachers can more easily see the world as their classroom. We want you to start imagining the educational possibilities that come with having access to a portable interactive device that enables you to turn any flat surface into an interactive whiteboard. Imagine how you could step outside traditional lesson boundaries to explore new methods to create a flexible, collaborative and creative learning environment for your students.
What are your ideas for:
  • Collaborating with other teachers — both inside and outside of your school — to teach interactive lessons?
  • Moving your students and your technology outside the four walls of your classroom for new and innovative learning opportunities?
  • Dreaming up new instructional methods that are only possible with the use of mobile interactive technology.

For more information and to apply for the grant, visit http://www.weareteachers.com/teaching-ideas/grant?grantId=102.

Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge - great STEM opportunity

text and illustration: International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge, Science and Engineering's Most Powerful Statements Are Not Made From Words Alone

Earlier this month, I wrote "The 16 Best Science Visualizations of 2011 - Use to engage students in Science" which was about the top science visualizations from the Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge for 2011. It's a great collection of images that can be used in science education.

The 2012 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge has been announced. The contest is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the journal Science to showcase science and engineering images. The old phrase "a picture is worth a thousands words" is very relevant to science, where many concepts are extremely hard to understand without images.

Categories include: Photography, Illustrations, Informational Posters and Graphics, Interactive Games and Videos. Winners are showcased in the journal Science, Science Online, and on the NSF Website.

While most of the entries are from scientists, engineers, and colleges, students of any age could enter and compete. This is a great project for students that incorporates science, photography, and computers. Even if students don't enter this contest, this is a great project. Students could be assigned to take photos, or create informational posters or games on a science topic. I'm planning on using this with my classes as a project this Spring and I'm going to contact the photography and digital arts teachers for assistance and collaboration on the project.

The competitions opens May 31, 2012 and the deadline is September 28, 2012. Questions can be directed to  scivis@nsf.gov.
