Digital Citizenship: Why Teachers Should Instill It In Students + Free Resources

Digital Citizenship: Why Teachers Should Instill It In Students + Free Resources

With February well underway— and e-learning lingering — the time is now to revisit the importance of online safety. After all, Safer Internet Day is on February 9 and Digital Learning Day is on February 25.

And while it might be tempting for parents and even teachers to put restrictions on kids’ online activities, whether that’s with family cybersecurity suites or parent controls, as educators we know instilling the importance of something in students can be a far more effective way for them to put our preaching into practice.

That’s where lessons in digital citizenship come in. Generally, there are nine tenets of this concept that hones in on the responsible and safe use of technology:

  1. Digital access

  2. Digital etiquette

  3. Digital commerce

  4. Digital rights and responsibilities

  5. Digital literacy

  6. Digital law

  7. Digital communication

  8. Digital security

Teaching all of these to students can feel like a task. Thankfully, there are a plethora of online resources on how to teach digital citizenship to K-12 students. I’ve included a few here:

I hope all is well and you and your family are staying healthy and safe. Recently, multiple school districts have been hit with ransomware (including on in my home state of CT), malware, virus's, DoS attacks (a 16 y/o student did this in Texas) and more.

Here are some resources for IT and educators to help protect your network, data, faculty and students.

Let me know if you have any questions.

New Training Courses from Google - DigCit and Accessibility

google for education logo

Google has some great resources for educators at the Google for Education Training Center. Included are courses on Chromebooks, becoming a Trainer, and Fundamentals and Advanced training for using G Suite in the classroom.

They recently added two new courses that are very relevant to educators. Like the other courses, they are easy to use and excellent materials.

The Digital Citizenship and Safety Course helps teachers learn how to help their students stay safe online and become responsible digital citizens.

The Tools for Diverse Learners Training helps teachers learn how to use the accessibility features in Chromebooks and G Suite to help their students succeed.

Take a look at these two new courses, as well as the rest of the training center, and see how they can help you help your students.

Edmodo and Common Sense Media release free Digital Citizenship resource for Educators

Edmodo
Digital Citizenship is an important topic and something that we must teach our students (and ourselves) in today's digital world.
Edmodo, a great educational app, and Common Sense Media have created a Digital Citizenship Starter Kit that teachers can download to use with their students. It is an  page PDF file that is free.

The Digital Citizenship Start Kit includes a poster and lessons and activities that cover topics such as privacy, internet safety and security, plagiarism, and cyberbullying.  You can also join the Digital Citizenship Community on Edmodo.

In addition to the starter Starter Kit, Common Sense Media and Edmodo are participating in Digital Citizenship Day in New York on October 2nd. Check out the Edmodo group (for teachers and students) for more details on the day and the Town Hall for teens, hosted by MTV executive news producer and hip-hop artist, Sway Calloway.

Google Good to Know is another great resource from Google. Good to Know has information and tips for internet safety, how your data is collected and used online, how Google uses data, and how to manage your data and what you share with web sites and Google.

This is a great resource for everyone and educators can use this to help students be more safe online and more knowledgeable about online data.
