CK-12 has over 100,000 teacher created digital textbooks available for free

CK-12, a great resource for free e-textbook and curricular resources, has just announced that there are now over 100,000 teacher-created digital textbooks available online on their site. These new "Flexbooks" were created by the 30,000 schools that are using CK-12's free digital resources.

 

They also have some great physics simulations and other resources available, as well as new elementary math resources and PLIX (Play, Learning, Interact, eXplore) which provides an interactive and immersive experience where students learn by doing, allowing them to use critical thinking and creativity. 

All of these resources are free and easy to use. The FlexBooks are customizable by the teacher using them to fit their needs and the needs of their students. 

Many schools have adopted these resources to replace traditional textbooks, saving millions of dollars and using those saving to purchase technology resources and other needed items. 

CK-12's resources are excellent quality, easy to use, and pedagogically well done.

Gooru - collections of free study guides and resources

Gooru is a site I wrote about this past February that was in private Alpha. I just received notice from them that they have now launched their Beta site and it's open for use.

Gooru is a search engine for education and learning. It contains study guides, aligned to standards and personalized, on topics in 5th - 12th grade math and science. Resources include videos, animations, links, digital textbooks, and more. All of the resources have been organized and reviewed by teachers or content experts.

It also contains a social aspect with a community to discuss topics and ask questions. There are also self-assessments that Gooru suggest resources and study guides to help you.

Gooru - online study tool with great resources

Gooru is a new (alpha) site I learned about from Richard Byrne on his Free Technology for Teacher's Blog.

Gooru is still in alpha status, meaning it is not fully open to the public yet, but you can still sign up. Gooru is an online study tool that allows students to explore resources and study guides that are aligned to standards. The materials are in math and science and are from 5th grade up to high school. Resources include digital textbooks, videos, animations, and much more. It also includes social media functions so that students can work, study, and share with others.

There are self-assessments in Gooru that help it adapt to the student, suggesting resources and study guides based on the student's performance.

The resources are all vetted by educational professionals and you can even create custom collections and resources.

The site has resources to learn more about it and how it can be beneficial to educators and students.

Free online textbooks

CK12 is a great resource for students and teachers. Their flexbook site contains tons of online textbooks, all free, for teachers to use. You can also create your own flexbook on the site, combining parts of other textbooks from their site, or using materials of your own.

They currently have flexbooks in Physics, Math, and Biology, but there are always more being created and added.

The site is relatively easy to use and I plan on creating my own Flexbook for my Physics class.
