SplashLearn - a game based learning program free for teachers and schools to use

SplashLearn is a game based learning program that is loved by over 33 million kids worldwide!! This program is free for teachers and schools to use.

SplashLearn stands with schools/districts affected with closure due to COVID-19 (Corona Virus) outbreak: All educators have free access to SplashLearn with Home Access to enable remote learning.

It’s fun to learn to play the piano, Why can’t it be fun to learn Math?

With above as the primary vision, SplashLearn offers a premier learning program that is transforming the way children learn through highly engaging, visually appealing and interactive games.

SplashLearn is a game-based learning program that intelligently adapts to each child’s skill level and helps them master grade-appropriate skills for Math and Reading at their own pace. SplashLearn is curriculum-aligned and covers Pre-kindergarten through Grade 5 for math, and elementary reading for kids from 3 to 8 years.

For the child, the program itself is simple and easy to navigate and needs minimum parental supervision. This will bring comfort and relief to parents who are already burdened with work from home along with caring for their families.

In November last year, SplashLearn made its Math learning program free for teachers and schools for use. The teachers can sign in for free and get access to its full content library of 400+ math skills. The teachers can create an account for their class and assign work that can be accessed by students for practice at home. This keeps the teacher-student connect and facilitates step by step learning for the child, thus bringing in the efficiency of ‘structured learning’ and ensuring that learning does not stop.

Earlier this year, SplashLearn announced the release of its program for Android Devices. With availability on Android, one of the most popular smartphone operating systems in the world with over 86.6% share, SplashLearn will be able to reach out to a larger audience and make its learning program available to them.

Google Feud - turns Google search suggestions into a game

Google Feud

Google Feud is a fun game Google has made that has players try to guess what Google's auto-complete will say to answer a question. It is easy, fun and makes you think. It is like family feud where you have to get the top most popular results to get the answer correct.

One warning to schools: certain results may be offensive or incomprehensible so it may not be acceptable for schools yet.

Choose a category and try to answer the question. It tallies your score and moves you on to each round. It's funny too since some of the answers are a little out there.

Graphite - reviews and ratings on apps, games and websites

Graphite is a nice site by Common Sense Media that has reviews and ratings on apps, websites and games for educational use. You can search for them by content, price, platform, grade level, and Common Core State Standard. Each resource is rated by educators too.

Home

If you sign up (free) you can create boards and favorites, review resources and create something called App Flows. This looks like a great resource.

An App Flow is an interactive framework tool that enables teachers to seamlessly flow apps, websites, and games throughout lessons. Starting with the familiar five-part lesson plan, an App Flow provides scaffolding to think with purpose about where, why, and how to integrate digital tools for learning into the curriculum.

The flow follows five teaching components:
Hook
Direct Instruction
Guided Practice
Independent Practice
Wrap Up
Teachers choose individual apps, games, or websites that match each component.

This is a great resource for busy educators looking for apps and websites to use in school.

The Physics of Angry Birds Space explained

Angry Birds Space is the newest version of the extremely popular game and it is as fun and addicting as the other versions.

I have always thought that games made an excellent learning tool when done right, with the right support by the teacher. Many video games teach students actual content knowledge, but most of them teach critical thinking and problem solving techniques. Research has shown that video games are effective as learning tools and many companies are working on educational video games. But, other video games can be used educationally also.

I love Angry Birds. I've have played, and solved, every version of the game and every level. It's one of those games you can't put down. I've played on my old Palm Pre+, my HP TouchPad, my Droid Incredible 2, and even on Chrome. My students and I are always talking about the new levels and how to solve them. I also use it in my Physics class to allow students to have fun while investigating forces, motion, momentum, angles and projectile motion. They have to analyze the problem and think through solutions. They learn and have fun.

Each time someone talks about using Angry Birds as an educational tool, there is someone else talking about it's errors or inaccuracies. It's actually built using a very good and accurate physics engine, so it is a great educational tool. But, Angry Birds Space has a whole new part to it - variable gravity fields. While some have said that it is inaccurate, I think it is just being creative. There are bubbles around the space objects that have different gravitational and frictional effects. They are not true examples of how gravity works around an object, but are fun and different and can be used as an educational tool.

Rhett Allain, a writer at Wired Magazine, has analyzed the physics of Angry Birds Space and "has now calculated the forces that act within the bubble-like region outside asteroids. After going through the first level, Allain found a constant force that acts as a sort of gravitational pull, along with a constant frictional force that pulls in the opposite direction as the bird's velocity. The birds are launched at a similar speed as on Earth (25 m/s in space as opposed to 23 m/s), but Allain suspects they get a slight speed boost as they enter the "air" around the asteroid. You can go ahead and read the source to see his work, which includes both calculations of the birds' potential energy and scripted models that mimic the motion of a red bird in orbit."

Read more about his analysis here: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/03/the-gravitational-force-in-angry-birds-space/
