cloudHQ - sync Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote and more

cloudHQ logo

cloudHQ is a unique service that, while not free, offers a very useful service. It allows you to backup and sync files between Google Drive, Dropbox, Sugarsync, Box, Basecamp, and Evernote. You can sync your notes and files between Basecamp, Dropbox and Evernote, back up your cloud data, and even synchronize docs and notes between Google Drive and Evernote in real time.

 Google Drive dropbox sugarsync box

cloudHQ continuously syncs all of your files between your different cloud services in real-time.

This is very useful for backup and security, along with making files more accessible to others who need to use them, and even turning your Evernote notes into collaborative Docs in Google Drive.

The personal plan is $4.90 per month, or $49 per year. There are also premium and enterprise accounts for higher fees, with more features.

While not free, this could be a very useful service for many people who use a variety of cloud services.
Google Docs is excellent for collaboration. Evernote is perfect for note taking, web clips, etc.

Sync all your Evernote notes and Google Docs documents. So all your Evernote notes can be Google Docs and all your Google Docs documents can be in Evernote. It really simplified everything - because you can start something as a note and migrate into Google Docs for collaboration. Or you can think about this setup as a backup: Google Docs is backup of Evernote and Evernote is backup of Google Docs.

Disclosure: I was not compensated in any way for this post. I just feel that this could be a useful tool for many people.

Cubby, cool file sync, share and storage service, offers big storage increase for referrals

LogMeIn is a service that allows you to remotely access someone else's computer (with their permission and cooperation, of course) so that you can help them fix a problem. It's much easier than having them try to explain the problem over the phone, or you having to drive to their house.

This past April they launched Cubby, a new cloud file sync, share and storage service. It's still in beta, but you can enter your email to get an invite. You can sync your files across all of your computers, tablets, and smartphones easily. You can share files and collaborate on them with others. You don't need to reorganize your files either. You can just select any folder on your device to by synced and make it accessible anywhere.

They have just announced that users can ear more memory, the free account starts with 5GB, by having friends sign up for an account. For every referral that signs up, you get 1GB of extra space. That's pretty good. Have a few friends sign up and you can easily end up with some serious storage space.

They have also announced some improvements to the iOS app and some other new features.

Read more about this announcement: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/13/logmeins-cubby-offering-up-1gb-for-referrals-tells-dropbox-whe/

Embedit - no longer accepting new embeds, send you to Box instead.

Embedit, a service that allowed you to embed files on your site or blog that I wrote about May 30th, is no longer accepting new embed files. They were purchased by Box and their site now recommends you go to Box for your file sharing needs. Existing embeds you have done through the service will work through September 1, 2012. For more information, please see their FAQ.

Box, known for giving away lots of free storage through the purchase of different devices, doesn't have an embed feature that I could find, but does let you share files through links.

You can easily use Google Docs to share and embed documents in blogs and websites also.

Doo.net - organize all of your documents in one place.

Doo.net is a new service that organizes all of your documents from your hard drive and cloud services (including email) into on system. You can search your documents via keyword, date, optical character recognition, tags, and document type. It will keep all of your device and documents in sync also.

It is available for OS X, with Windows 8, iOS, Android apps and Google Docs integration all coming soon.

The free version will sync and collect 2,000 documents. You can upgrade to paid accounts for more space.

This promises to be a great tool for collecting and organizing all of your documents, no matter where you have them. Teachers, students, schools, and business could all find this useful.

Dropbox getting rid of Shared Folders for New users

Dropbox, the very popular cloud file/sync/backup/sharing service, has announced that starting July 31st, new users will not be able to create Public Folders. Current users will be able to still use public folders, but anyone signing up for Dropbox after July 31st will not be able to.

Shared folders was an easy way to share files with others and allow teams to have access to the same files. Dropbox did recently add a new feature that allows you to easily create a link to a file in your Dropbox account and share that with others.

I've used Public Folders a few times, but not enough that this would effect me even if current users where losing the feature. But, if you are someone who would use Public Folders a lot, sign up for Dropbox before July 31st.

5 Different Ways Technology Has Made Learning Easier - guest post

Technology in education has been a hot topic for a while now and understandably so, especially as it continues to grow in importance in our personal, educational, and professional lives. Each facet of technology plays a different part in the way that both teachers teach and students learn. And the best part about it is that you can access a lot of it for free. These five technological breakthroughs have all helped improve education and the ease with which students comprehend lessons:

1. YouTube – Who would have ever thought that YouTube would have a place in the classroom? While it’s made its name off funny home videos and clips from TV shows, it also has allowed teachers to visually show something that they previously were confined to teaching from a text book. With a large number of students being visual learners, this offers the perfect complement to traditional lesson plans.

2. Apps – Apps have revolutionized the way we do things. The common phrase “there’s an app for that” couldn’t ring more true, and goes far beyond the normal GPS or Words with Friends games we’re all familiar with. Apps have far surpassed the confinement of being fun ways to pass the time and have evolved into different ways to help students learn concepts and brush up on educational skills, with apps ranging from helping with grammar/spelling/punctuation mastery to fine-tuning math skills.

CopyBackupFiles Want to backup files? Here are 8 free web applications that can help you

3. Drop Boxes – Internet drop boxes have all but eliminated the “dog ate my homework” excuse because everything can be submitted online. This makes it easier for the student to submit work, and makes it easier for the teacher to keep track of work because it’s all already in one neat place.

4. Individual laptops – A lot of schools are moving over to having individual laptops for each student, which has taken lessons to an entirely new level. It allows teachers and students to interact with lessons individually and as a whole, lets students have each subject’s notes and assignments in one place, and all but eliminates the need for lugging around textbooks to each class and home every night.

5. Social media – You can build fan pages for classrooms, stage Twitter chats for interaction outside of the classroom, and provide web pages that act as a resource guide for ongoing lessons, all through the use of social media. Social media allows us to interact on an entirely different level, and engages students because it’s something they already have an interest in.

Education has done an exceptional job thus far of evolving as technology evolves and grows, and it’s likely that the two will only become further intertwined as technology continues to grow and mature. Finding a way to integrate the two is essential to helping our students continue to learn with ease, and helps further guarantee their educational success.

CX - file sync, share and backup service with 10GB free account

CX is a  file sync, share and backup service, similar to Dropbox or Sugarsync that I have reviewed before, but I've been using it more lately and really like how it works.

CX allows you to backup your files, sync them across multiple devices, share your files and collaborate on them with others, and even discover new ideas and friends.

A free account starts off at 10GB of storage, which is more that the other services offer. Like the other services, you can earn more storage for referring others to sign up (to a maximum of 16GB). There are also paid plans with more storage (50GB, 100GB and custom amounts).

It is currently available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android so you can access your files and work on them from any device.

What is unique is that every file you share has a comment system so you can share it and collaborate with others on it.

It was simple to set up and the CX directory on your computer can be moved to any folder and automatically syncs your files across devices.

It's a great, free, easy service to use, and the 10MB for a free account is great.

Check out CX and sync, share, collaborate and backup your files.

Google Drive is here! Really! No, I mean it. Free online storage.

Google Drive, Google's online file storage system, is now live. With it you can upload and access all of your files including videos, photos, PDFs, Google Docs and more, just like with Dropbox or Sugarsync.

Google Docs is integrated with Google Drive so you can work on all your documents, presentations and spreadsheets, as well as share content and then add and reply to comments on any file (PDF, image, video, and so on) and receive notifications when some one else comments on a shared item. It has added some social networking features to cloud file storage. Drive will also recognize text in scanned documents. (similar to what Evernote does).

One other nice feature is that you can open all these types of files (over 30 different ones) right in your browser, even if you don't have the original program the file was created in on your computer. That's a big feature.

You can access your files on the web and install the Drive on your Mac or PC and your Android phone (iOS app coming soon). There is also a screen reader for blind readers.

You can also search your files easily by keyword, file type, owner and more. Not surprising that you can search like this since it is Google.
 Access everywhere

The free account is 5GB. You can purchase more if you need it. 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month, or, get ready for it, 1TB for $49.99/month. That's a lot of memory. When you upgrade to a paid account, your Gmail storage goes up to 25GB also.

This is another great option for backing up and having cloud access to all of your files. I like the social sharing and commenting features and how it is integrated into Google Docs.

Here's a video about Google Drive

Dropbox adds simple sharing by link - great feature

Dropbox, one of my favorite cloud file storage/sync/share services, has an update that makes it very simple to share files and folders with others. In the past, the person you wanted to share with would need a Dropbox account for you to share files or folders. Now, you can share read-only folders with anyone using a link without needing to have a Dropbox account.

You simply right click on the file or folder and select "Get Link" on the menu. This makes that file or folder public to anyone using that link. They links don't expire so you will have to manually make the file or folder private again. They are only able to view, not edit.

This is a nice feature, especially for teachers who may want to share a file or folder with students without the students needing a Dropbox account. If you need people to edit files, you'll want to share a folder with them (they need a Dropbox account), not a link, as links are read-only.

If you don't have a file sync/share/backup service yet, you should really look into getting one. It makes it easy to access your files anywhere, including on mobile devices, and saves you when a device crashes.
