Nimbus Screenshot - another great screenshot tool for Chrome

Yesterday I wrote about Awesome Screenshot, a free screenshot tool for Chrome. One of my connections on LinkedIn also suggested Nimbus Screenshot.

Nimbus Screenshot is another free screenshot tool for Chrome (browser and Chromebooks) that has some great features. It is also available for Firefox, Android and PC.

I'm using the Chrome version now and will be trying out the Android version later. It's easy to use and intuitive.

One nice feature about Nimbus is that it lets you save your screenshot, with annotations and edits, directly to Google Drive, which is especially great for Chromebook users.

Other features include: ability to capture whole web page, part of it or the whole browser window, edit screenshots, create your own drawing from scratch, paste patterns and textboxes to screenshot, resize and crop, add arrows and stickers and save as JPG, PNG and BMP formats.

Awesome Screenshot - screen shot app for Chrome (replacing webpage screenshot)

Extension

I was using Webpage Screenshot to do all of my screen shots for this blog and other projects and then I noticed it missing from my tool bar the other day. I went into Extensions and found that it was disabled by Google for violating the Chrome Webstore Policy. Then I saw this article that explained that the app collects an enormous amount of personal data and violates Google's policies. So, I looked for something else and found:

Awesome Screenshot is a great, free web app that takes screenshots in Chrome (OS and browser). You can capture a selection, the visible part of a page or the whole page. You can store images on their site or download them to your own device. It supports PNG formats and even supports horizontal scrolling on the page when capturing. You can also annotate and edit images.

It's very easy to use and works great and is great for anyone needing to take screen shots.

Cloudinary - host and edit images online for free

cloudinary logo - transparent (500px)

Cloudinary is a site that provides image hosting and editing/formatting. The free version has great features and is all most people would need.

Cloudinary lets you use a custom URL to format and edit your images online. You upload your image and then access them using the special URL based on the formatting you want. The original photo stays online and you can request different formats based on your needs. You can even automatically combine multiple images into one.

This makes it very easy to manipulate and use images in your websites or blogs.

The free version has 95% of the features the paid versions do. The main difference is limits. The free version limits you to 500MB of storage, 50,000 images, and 1,000 MB of monthly bandwith. That's a lot for most users.

Check it out and see how it will work for you. http://cloudinary.com

Aviary for Facebook Released - image editing app right in Facebook

I posted two articles today about free image editing apps and services and then I just got an email from one of them. Aviary, a great, free online image tool, is now available in Facebook. I use Aviary's image editing tool and screen capture browser extension on a daily basis.

Aviary has announced that their simple photo editor is now available as a Facebook app. It features photo effects, stickers, auto enhancers, tools for brightness, saturation, contrast, red-eye, whiten, blemish, and more.

This means that you can edit and enhance your photos right in Facebook.

This is a great tool for schools that use Facebook, whether for communication or for class projects.

Two More Free Image Editing Resources

Earlier today (actually wrote the article yesterday and had it post today) I wrote about some free Image editing sites and software. Google Picnik is shutting down in April, so many people are going to be looking for alternatives. In addition to the three (Aviary, Paint, and iPiccy) I wrote about this morning, I have found three more alternatives:

Pixlr - Pixlr is a free, online image editing tool that is very powerful, yet pretty easy to use. It has a lot of great features and the menu and icons are similar to other services, so the learning curve is small.

Google+ Creative Kit is a full-featured image editing system built into Google+. It is basically what Picnik was, now on Google+. Edit, crop, add effects, and much more, all through Google+.

So, that's five alternatives to Picnik.

What do you use for image editing?

Great, free Image editing sites and software

Google is shutting down Picnik soon, so everyone is looking for an alternative for online image editing.

Aviary offers a suite of online image services that include screen capture, image editing and much more. It's free to use and very powerful. Read more here: Aviary image tools

Paint.net is not online, but it is a free download that is easy to use and extremely powerful tool for Windows. It has layers, special effects and much more and the keyboard shortcuts make it very fast to use.

iPiccy is a service I just learned about from Steve Dembo over at Discovery Education. iPiccy requires no login, is easy to use, and has tons of features. You can upload pictures, enter a URL to a picture or import a picture.

So, even though Picnik is going away, there are some great, free options for image editing.

It is free and there is no account registration needed.

It is very easy to use and can come in handy for people like me who use screen captures in my blog. The screen shot above was made using Awesome Screenshot.

Aviary Falcon - online image markup

Aviary has introduced Falcon, a web based image editing tool. With Falcon, you can capture images and web pages from your browser and crop, resize, and mark them up. Mark up options include text, shapes, colors, and more.

The best part about this is that it is web based so there is no software to install. I found it easy to use and very fast and responsive. This is a great alternative to desktop based image editors, especially for schools, as students can use it from home also.

It is free and you can save your files to your free account or download them.

UPDATE - There is also an Aviary extension available for Firefox and Chrome. One click and you are off and screen capturing, editing, etc.
